'mardaani" is a 2017 Indian bilingual drama film directed by Pratim D. Gupta, produced by Aanand L. Rai, with dialogue written by Gulzar, and starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. The film is about the story of an Indian woman named Meera Malik who works in the Mumbai Police Department's crime branch and her obsessive quest to bring down a drug dealer named Jagdish Patel. It premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival on May 21, 2017 and opened in India on October 19, 2017 to positive reviews but met with commercial success both domestically and overseas. A sequel, "Mardaani 2", was released on 22 September 2018 worldwide except in Kerala and Puducherry. It was originally titled "Patel Ki Mardani" and was later renamed to 'Mardaani', after the protagonist. The film is set in the metropolis of Mumbai and focuses on a woman named Meera Malik and her battle against crime syndicates that run rampant in Mumbai's underworld. As part of her duties, she is tasked with taking down an international drug lord named Jagdish Patel. The film starts out with a flashback to when Meera was a child living in rural India alongside her family, who were small farmers. The family was attacked by local criminals, and the twins, named Shiva and Sandeep, were orphaned. The rest of the family members were killed in the attack. Meera was ultimately spared because she was not with her family at the time. She grew up in an orphanage in Mumbai with none to play with or talk to, so she played alone. One day, Meera is visited by an older woman who asks Meera to give her a message to Jagdish Patel. She asks that if Patel ever asks for her then she should tell him "Mardaani" everything everything about himself—his life, his community members, his business associates, all of it. Meera goes on to tell us that when she was in her mid-twenties, she was at the police academy in Delhi. After training for 3 years, Meera is promoted to the crime branch of Mumbai Police. Meera eventually finds Jagdish Patel, who has the reputation of being the most famous drug lord in Mumbai. It is shown that he also owns a huge amount of property in Mumbai and owns many factories across India. He also has interests in several countries outside India, including one-third ownership of a media company in Indonesia. Jagdish is shown to be the leader of a powerful gang who are active in trafficking drugs, arms smuggling, money laundering, and more. They are also into people smuggling where they smuggle Indians into countries in Europe. Among the gang members that are seen in the movie are Jagdish's trusted aide(s) who function as his right hand man(s) named Bharat Patel, Vicky Ji, Chiman Vanvariya, 'Gobar', 'Buddha', etc., all of whom aid Jagdish in running his illegal operations. 8eeb4e9f32 46
